Orgelet
har en spesiell historie; det har 10 klingende stemmer, og det ble
bygget som et stort skaporgel. Klaviaturet har kort oktav. Til tross
for grundige arkivsøk har det ikke lykkes å finne fram til
orgelbyggeren. Instrumentet har imidlertid så mange fellestrekk med
positivene fra Mjøstradisjonen at det kan ha blitt bygget av en
orgelbygger fra Mjøsområdet. Orgelet ble opprinnelig bygget for gamle
Røros kirke, men da denne ble revet i 1784, ble det flyttet over i den
nye kirken. Overskapets dører ble fjernet og orgelet ble utstyrt med et
stort, dekorert prospekt i rokokkostil.
Både orgelet og prospektet som er en kulisse, står på toppen av prekestolalteret. Orgelet har gjennomgått flere omfattende reparasjoner og ombygginger. I 1823 utførte Anders Larsen Baakindbakken fra Toten større reparasjonsarbeider på orgelet. I 1845 fikk orgelet full kromatisk store oktav og likesvevende temperatur. Urmaker Mentz Rhodum fra Trondheim utførte arbeidet. I 1890 ble orgelet flyttet til Norsk Folkemuseum i Oslo etter at Røros kirke hadde fått et nytt orgel bygget av Albert Hollenbach. Det nye orgelets orgelhus og fasade var ikke tilpasset prekestolalteret i kirken og allerede i 1915 var det gamle orgelet tilbake på sin opprinnelige plass. Til tross for et par restaureringsforsøk i løpet av 1900-tallet stod orgelet stort sett uspillbart fram til 1995 da Gunnar Fabricius Husted i samarbeid med orgelkonsulent Cornelius Edskes foretok en grundig restaurering av instrumentet og satte det tilbake til den stand det hadde hatt i 1784.

The
organ was built as a large cupboard organ without facade. Two doors at
the keyboard side of the instrument could originally open the upper
case, which contains the windchest with the pipes. In the lower case
two 6' wedge bellows were placed. Due to lack of space, the bellows
point out at the back of the case. in order to blow the organ the
bellows were treaded, not pulled by bars at the side of the case like
the smaller cupboard organs of the semi-professional organ building
traditions in Norway. The keyboard is placed at the top of the lower
case at a convenient height for the organist to stand up when playing.
Although the archives have been thoroughly searched, no traces of the
organ builder have been found. The organ has, however, many
similarities with positives belonging to the semi-professional
tradition from the area around the lake Mjøsa in the central part of
Norway, and an organ builder from this area could have built the
instrument in 1742.
The organ was moved from the old Røros church to its present location
in the new church in 1784. The two doors of the upper case were removed
and a self-carrying facade with amateurishly made wooden dummy pipes
and rococo style ornamentation was made for the organ. Like in
Kongsberg the new church was built after new liturgucal ideas, with the
pulpit above the altar, and the organ at the top. The entire altar
section dominates the room in a magnificent way, but even at a distance
it becomes obvious that the organ has no sounding facade pipes. The
organ was thoroughly restored by the organ builder Gunnar Fabritius
Husted in 1995.
